As well as making changes to your browser there are other simple changes you can make to enhance the speed of your computer and keep it running as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Disk defragmentation is perhaps one of the simplest moves you can make – and doing it every fortnight or so will improve your computer’s performance and its internet connectivity in the process. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. You can learn how to do this here.
Firewalls are great – but you only need one. Any more than this and you run the risk of them interfering with one another, reducing your web performance and also exposing you to possible security issues. (Windows have their own firewall – make sure that if you’re running a separate one, you’ve turned it off. Search > Windows Firewall > Change Settings).
Make sure you have lots of free space available. If your hard drive is full to bursting, take files that aren’t used often and burn them onto a disk or put them on an external hard drive. The computer uses the free hard drive space as virtual memory – if there is little or none, your computer and your internet connection will be slowed down.
Scan for viruses and spyware for security purposes, of course, but also because they take up valuable memory. The lack of memory, as explained above, can contribute to a slow computer and internet connection.
Close programs that aren’t required. They use up memory and therefore, slow down your computer and its internet connection.
Think about upgrading your computer. An older computer may not have the capability to make use of the Internet which means that you’ll not be getting the full benefit of it either. If your computer is more than 5 years old, it is well worth considering an upgrade – in terms of the computer or the operating system.
And finally, it sounds very simple but….turn your computer off every night! Leaving it in standby mode will ultimately slow down your internet speed – because of the memory that’s being taken up.
